HUD USPS ZIP Code Crosswalk

The HUD USPS ZIP Code Crosswalk is a crosswalk of geographic classifications, principally between those used by HUD and the USPS.

Description

The crosswalks are maintained by the department's Office of Policy Development and Research (PD&R). Principally, they are used to attach ZIP code-level data to the geographies that the department uses.

Alongside ZIP codes, the USPS-labeled city name and state abbreviation are included.

Usage

The crosswalks can be accessed online. A login and/or API key is necessary.

Export options include:

Note that inverse crosswalks are available because there is no 1-to-1 relation between these geographies. The 'ZIP-TRACT' crosswalk should be used to allocate ZIP code-level data to Census tracts, while the 'TRACT-ZIP' crosswalk should be used to allocate Census tract-level data to ZIP codes.

Furthermore, the crosswalks are updated on a quarterly basis. Data is available going back to 2010.

History

The crosswalks are updated for new Census tract definitions as they become available. 2010 census tracts are used from 2012 Q1. 2020 census tracts are used from 2023 Q1.
