The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) is an executive department of the federal government. It is charged with food safety and protecting natural resources.
Composition
The department is led by the Secretary and Deputy Secretary of USDA. Several agency-specific leaderships follow.
The department is divided into eight mission areas, each overseen by an undersecretary:
- Farm Production and Conservation
- Food, Nutrition, and Consumer Services
- Food Safety
- Marketing and Regulatory Programs
- Natural Resources and the Environment
- Research, Education, and Economics
- Rural Development
- Trade and Foreign Agriculture Affairs
One or more agencies are charged with these mission areas. For example, the Forest Service is responsible for Natural Resources and Environment.
