Bureau of Labor Statistics
The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) is a U.S. DOL agency. It is a surveyer and researcher for labor economics and statistics.
Composition
The Census Bureau is overseen by the U.S. Department of Labor.
The bureau is led by a commissioner and deputy commissioner.
History
BLS was established in 1884 under the Department of the Interior.
The Department of Commerce and Labor was established in 1903 and BLS was re-organized under it. That department was then split into the modern DOC and DOL in 1913.
Since 1940, as part of the Current Employment Statistics (CES) program, BLS has jointly operated the household survey with the Census Bureau, and independently operated the payroll survey, to create monthly unemployment rate estimates.
