United States Armed Forces

The United States Armed Forces are the permanent, professional, and volunteer army of the United States.


Composition

There are 6 active duty branches of the Armed Forces.

  1. U.S. Army
  2. U.S. Navy
  3. U.S. Air Force
  4. U.S. Marine Corps
  5. U.S. Coast Guard
  6. U.S. Space Force

Each has a distinct chain of command.

There are essentially 7 reserve services:

  1. Army National Guard
  2. Air National Guard
  3. U.S. Army Reserve
  4. U.S. Navy Reserve
  5. U.S. Air Force Reserve
  6. U.S. Marine Corps Reserve
  7. U.S. Coast Guard Reserve

The National Guard services have a single chain of command distinct from any other branches. The Reserve services are subordinate to the corresponding active duty branches.

Unified command comes from the Joint Staff and the DoD.
