History
Wharton joined Parliament for the first time in 1673, representing a rotten borough. He served on William's privy council from 1689.
His father died in 1696, leaving him to inherit the barony of Wharton.
Anne succeeded in 1702 and dismissed all Whigs from government. As the War of Spanish Succession dragged on though, her government came to be dominated by a Whig Junto that included Somers, Montagu, Wharton, and Russell. Wharton was created earl of Wharton and Viscount Winchendon in 1706.
This government fell in 1710, in the context of the Sacheverell riots.
After George's succession, Wharton was created marquess of Catherloughmmm, earl of Rathfarnham, baron of Trim, marquess of Wharton, and marquess of Malmesbury. He died shortly after in 1715.
