As a backbencher he campaigned for Leave in the 2016 Brexit referendum.

Sunak was appointed to a minor ministerial role after May shuffled the cabinet in 2018.

He was an early supporter of Johnson's leadership campaign, for which he was rewarded with senior positions in the Treasury. He was appointed chancellor in early 2020.
