Philip Yorke

Philip Yorke was a Whig politician and member of the Parliament in Great Britain.


History

Yorke rose to prominence as a lawyer. One of his most important works in legalism was the Yorke-Talbot opinion, which argued that slavery was legal in Great Britain.

He won election to the House of Commons in 1719.

He was created baron of Hardwicke and viscount of Royston in 1733. At this point he moved from the House of Commons, to the Lords.

In 1754, he was raised to earl of Hardwicke.
