Charles Montagu

Charles Montagu was a Whig politician and member of the Parliament.

History

Montagu joined government in 1692. He rose rapidly through the Treasury and was created baron of Halifax in 1700.

Anne succeeded in 1702 and dismissed all Whigs from government. As the War of Spanish Succession dragged on though, her government came to be dominated by a Whig Junto that included Somers, Montagu, Wharton, and Russell.

This government fell in 1710, in the context of the Sacheverell riots.

Montagu was returned to government upon George's succession, and also raised to earl of Halifax plus a courtesy title of Viscount Sunbury.

He died shortly after in 1715.
