Following the death of his uncle, '''George Fitz``Roy''', in 1747, he became his grandfather's heir apparent and began to use the courtesy title of '''earl of Euston'''. He entered the [[UnitedKingdom/Parliament|House of Commons]] in 1756 for a pocket borough. His grandfather died the following year, leaving him to succeed his titles and a seat in the Lords. Fitz``Roy was appointed to government in 1765 under [[UnitedKingdom/WilliamPitt|Pitt]]. Due to Pitt's failing health, he was the effective leader of government starting in 1767.
