History
The first settlements near Ankara were settled by the Hattians during the Bronze Age.
The Greeks and Romans referred to the city as either Ánkyra or Ancyra. The Sultanate of Rum and the Ottoman Empire used the name Angora.
Timur defeated Bayezid I in 1402 in the Battle of Ankara.
Kemal Atatürk established a provisional government in Ankara. When Turkey gained recognition as a sovereign state, the capital remained there instead of Constantinople.
Government
Municipal elections are held simultaneously across Turkey every five years. The province of Ankara is comprised of 25 districts, each electing their own mayor. The Ankara Metropolitan Municipality covers 9 of these districts and elects an additional, superior mayor.
The provincial government is led by a governor appointed by the president.
Ankara and Istanbul are the only provinces that elect 3 deputies to the national assembly.
