The first settlements near Ankara were settled by the Hattians during the Bronze Age.
The Greeks and Romans referred to the city as either Ánkyra or Ancyra. The Sultanate of Rum and the Ottoman Empire used the name Angora.
Timur defeated Bayezid I in 1402 in the Battle of Ankara.
