History
The Thai Nation Party was founded by Chatichai Choonhavan in 1974. It was largely a reaction to the growing influence of protests, especially in the context of the October 14 Event that forced Thanom Kittikachorn to resign in 1973.
The Thai Nation Party was briefly in a coalition government with the Democrat Party, following the 1976 general elections. Following the October 6 event, the military overthrew that government. Chatichai continued to serve in government until, rose to deputy prime minister within the junta, and finally led the Thai Nation Party to victory in the 1988 general elections.
