History
Thavisin was deposed by the military junta in August 2024. He had appointed Pichit Chuenban to the cabinet, whom the military objected to. The Constitutional Court quickly removed him from government, at which point Shinawatra emerged as the only viable leadership candidate in the ruling coalition. She was sworn in as PM within a few days of the ruling.
A phone call between Shinawatra and Hun Sen, in which she insulted a regional commander of the Thai military who had emerged as a problematic agitator for border conflict in May 2025, was leaked. Aside from public demonstrations calling for her resignation, this created a rift between her and the military junta that enabled her civilian government. The Constitutional Court suspended her term as PM in June, pending a ruling on an alleged ethics violation.
