  • f for output filename

  • v for verbose

Create gzip-compressed

tar -czvf archive.tar.gz file1 file2 file3

  • z for gzip compression

Create gzip-compressed, password-protected

tar -czvf archive.tar.gz file1 file2
gpg -c archive.tar.gz

Extract all

tar -xvf archive.tar

  • x for extract

List all

tar -tf archive.tar
