Description
The metropolitan area sits where the White Nile meets the Blue Nile.
The city of Khartoum was established first by Muhammad Ali as a military outpost, but shortly after designated it as the administrative capital for Egyptian-occupied Sudan. It continued to serve as such for the Anglo-Egyptian condominium. The Mahdists moved the capital across the river to Omdurman during their reign. Khartoum was re-established as the capital in 1898 and has served in that role ever since.
Khartoum was destroyed first by flooding in 1854, and again in 1885 by the Siege of Khartoum. Through these, Omdurman emerged as the most populous area. After the Mahdist State fell in 1898, Khartoum was rebuilt according to modern European standards while Khartoum North developed into the new military and industrial center.
