Japanese Occupation
In 1905, Korea became a vassal of Imperial Japan. Two years later Gojong (고종) was forced to abdicate the throne and a formal annexation began. In this period, the kingdom became known as Chōsen.
Soviet and American Occupation Zones
A provisional government known as the People's Republic of Korea (PRK) was organized to administer Korea following Japanese surrender.
The United States did not recognize the PRK. Instead, the United States Army Military Government in Korea (USAMGIK) was established. The Republic of Korea eventually succeeded this occupation.
The USSR took control of the PRK and established the Democratic People's Republic of Korea.
