Party of the Democratic Left

Party of the Democratic Left (Strana demokratickej ľavice, SDĽ) was a political party in Slovakia.

Platform

History

The party was formed out of the former KSS in 1990, and originally kept that name. By 1992, it had settled into Party of the Democratic Left.

From 1994 until 1997, the party participated in the Common Choice (Spoločná voľba) coalition with the Green Party and SDP.

In 2000, Fico led a small faction from the party to found Smer. The next year, Social Democratic Alternative (Sociálnodemokratická alternatíva) also broke away.

By 2005, most of the membership had moved into Smer and a merger was executed.
