History
Novi Pazar developed as a market near the fortress of Ras in the 15th century. The Ottomans renamed the town from Novo Trgoviste ("new market") to Yeni Pazar ("new bazaar"). The modern name was adapted from both.
Stari Ras
Stari Ras ("Old Ras") is an abandoned fortress city.
Known alternatively as Arsa or Rasa, it served as the capital of the kingdom of Serbia.
The market town of Trgoviste developed around the fortress in the 14th century. The oldest parts, nearer to Ras, became Staro Trgoviste ("Old Trgoviste"); Novo Trgoviste ("New Trgoviste") was about 11km east.
