Portobelo
Portobelo is a historic port town.
History
The town was established by Francisco Velarde y Mercado in 1597 as Porto Bello. The Portuguese name was Porto Belo.
It became a major port for the Spanish Navy and treasure fleets.
The town was captured by Admiral Edward Vernon in 1739, at the start of the War of Jenkins' Ear. The English referred to it as Portobello.
