The oldest settlement in the area of Kotor was called Acruvium, Ascrivium, or Ascruvium. It was a settlement in the Dalmatia. It developed as a city-state under Byzantine protection, and came to be known as Dekatera, Dekaderon, or Cattaro.
In the 11th and 12th centuries it came under occupation first by Bulgaria, then Duklja, then Serbia. The city enjoyed general autonomy under Serbian control. In the late 14th century it was occupied by Hungary and Bosnia.
Kotor submitted to the Venetian suzerainity in 1420 and remained a part of the Venetian Albania province until 1797.
