Kotor
Kotor is a city in Montenegro.
History
The oldest settlement in the area of Kotor was called Acruvium, Ascrivium, or Ascruvium. It was a settlement in the Roman province of Dalmatia.
Kotor developed as a city-state under Byzantine protections. It came to be known as Dekatera, Dekaderon, or Cattaro.
In the 11th and 12th centuries it came under occupation first by the First Bulgarian Empire, then the principality of Duklja, then the grand principality of Serbia. The city enjoyed general autonomy under Serbian control. In the late 14th century it was occupied by the kingdoms of Hungary and Bosnia.
Kotor submitted to the Republic of Venice in 1420 and remained a part of the Venetian Albania province until 1797.
