Yasuo Fukuda

Yasuo Fukuda (福田 康夫) was prime minister of Japan.

History

Yasuo was the son of prime minister Takeo Fukuda.

He was elected to the diet in 1990 for the LDP.

Following Abe's resignation, Fukuda beat out Tarou Asou in the ensuing leadership contest. He became prime minister on September 26th.

While a censure against Fukuda passed in the House of Councillors in June 2008, a vote of confidence countered it in the House of Representatives.

Fukuda made a surprise announcement of his resignation on September 1st, explaining that he wanted to remove obstacles to passing legislation. Asou was the favorite of the ensuing leadership contest and indeed succeeded Fukuda.
