One of these breakaway groups was '''Kibou no Tou''' (''希望の党'', ''Party of Hope''). On May 7th, 2018, the Democratic Party and Kibou no Tou re-merged to found the '''Democratic Party for the People'''. The two party leaders co-led for an interim period. A leadership contest in September elected '''Yuuichirou Tamaki''' of the latter as the first permanent leader. In April 2019, the '''Liberal Party''' (another breakaway group) also re-merged. On August 19th, 2020, the party announced a merger with the [[Japan/ConstitutionalDemocraticParty|Constitutional Democratic Party]]. Most members transferred, however Tamaki and 14 other MPs remained.
