History
The Democratic Party formed ahead of the 2016 House of Councillors elections as a merger of the Democratic Party of Japan with the Japan Innovation Party. Katsuya Okada of the former DPJ led the party into the election.
No leadership team managed to survive for a significant duration. Due to the poor results in those House of Councillors election (lost 19 of their 59 seats that were contested), Okada resigned. Due to the poor results in the 2017 Tokyo Metropolitan Assembly elections (lost 10 of their 15 seats), both Yoshihiko Noda and Renhou Saitou resigned. Due to the poor results of the 2017 general elections, Seiji Maehara resigned.
Even ahead of those general elections, the party began to fragment. The most important of the rbeakaway groups was the Constitutional Democratic Party.
In 2018, the party reorganized as the Democratic Party for the People.
