The Democratic Party emerged from the merger of the Democratic Party of Japan with the Japan Innovation Party.

Ahead of the 2017 general elections, the party already began to fragment. The most important of these was the Constitutional Democratic Party.

In 2018 the party reorganized as the Democratic Party for the People.
