Constitutional Democratic Party

The Constitutional Democratic Party is a political party in Japan.

Platform

History

The Constitutional Democratic Party formed as a breakaway group from the Democratic Party just before the 2017 elections. Yukio Edano founded and led the party into the elections, in which the CDP won 19% of the vote and became the second largest party in the diet.

In August 2020, a merger with the Democratic Party for the People was announced. Almost all members transferred to the CDP with Edano retaining leadership. An amicable electoral pact was still agreed with the remainder that did not transfer.

On November 14th, the Social Democratic Party voted to merge with the CDP. Much like the merger with the DPP, almost all members transferred and a pact was agreed with the remainder.

The CDP went into the 2021 elections with 110 seats in the diet. While the party outperformed their previous election, the total number of seats actually fell to 96. Edano resigned as a result.

In the November 30th leadersip contest, Kenta Izumi of the former DPP was elected the second party leader.
