2000 General Elections

The 2000 General elections were called early by Mori. They were held on June 25th, 2000.

History

The last lower house elections were held in 1996.

Obuchi died on April 1st. Mori emerged from the leadership contest as the new prime minister, but due to a series of gaffes he was deeply unpopular. The most notable of these gaffes involved referring to Japan as a divine nation (神の国, kami no kuni), invoking language from Imperial Japanese law.

While the elections were technically called early, the diet's term would have expired just a couple months later in October.
