1993 General Elections

The 1993 General elections were called early by Miyazawa.

History

The last lower house elections were held in 1990.

A vote of no confidence was called on June 18th. Due to a rebellion by 39 LDP members, as well as a further 18 LDP abstentions, the government lost the vote. Miyazawa called the election rather than resign.

Results

For the first time since 1955, the LDP lost the majority.

Hosokawa rallied a coalition of 8 parties to form the first non-LDP government.
