A vote of no confidence was called on May 16th. Unexpectedly, due to abstentions by 69 [[Japan/LiberalDemocraticParty|LDP]] members, the government lost the vote. [[Japan/MasayoshiOuhira|Ouhira]] called the election rather than resign. Ouhira's health rapidly deteriorated and he died on June 12th.
