The 1980 General elections were called early by Ouhira. They were held on June 22nd, 1980.


History

The last lower house elections were held in 1979.

A vote of no confidence was called on May 16th. Unexpectedly, due to abstentions by 69 LDP members, the government lost the vote. Ouhira called the election rather than resign.

Ouhira's health rapidly deteriorated and he died on June 12th. Ito acted as prime minister for the next month.
