Composition
The legislature has 290 members. They are elected to 4 year terms.
5 seats are set aside for religious minorities:
- 2 for Armenians
- Assyrians
- Jews
- Zoroastrians
Candidacy for an election must be pre-approved by the shourā-ye negahbān (guardian council).
History
The legislature is a direct successor to the National Consultative Assembly established in 1906.
Through the Cultural Revolution, the assembly was renamed to the majles-e shurâ-ye eslâmi (Islamic Consultative Assembly). Simultaneously the senate was abolished (or arguably replaced by the shourā-ye negahbān, guardian council), leading to the Majlis as a unicameral legislature.
