History
Ladislaus was the eldest son of John Hunyadi, the regent (captain general) of Ladislaus V.
Ladislaus became a rival to Ulrich II, the princely count of Celje and ban of Slavonia. Ladislaus briefly held the banate of Croatia and Dalmatia in 1453, but was forced to renounce the title.
Following John's death in 1456, Ulrich II succeeded his titles as regent. Ladislaus's rivalry with him exacerbated to the point of ordering his assassination on November 9, 1456.
Ladislaus V pardoned Ladislaus for the assassination but summoned him to Buda. He was imprisoned, tried, and finally executed on March 16, 1457.
Legacy
With his dramatic execution coming shortly before the death of Ladislaus V (November 23), Matthias I was well positioned to be unanimously elected king.
