Esztergom
Esztergom is a city with county rights in Hungary.
History
Esztergom first was a Roman frontier town under a variety of names: Salvio Mansio, Salvio, Solva, Stregom, and Gran.
Grand Prince Geza built a palace here in 960 and reigned over the Hungarian tribes from it.
While St. Stephen I was crowned in this city in 1000, he would move the capital to Szekesfehervar during his reign. Esztergom would continue to see infrequent use as a capital over the next several centuries, until Bela IV cemented Buda as his capital.
The archdiocese of Esztergom was the first and most important bishopric founded by St. Stephen I in Hungary.
