In the aftermath of World War 1 and the Treaty of Trianon, the French Army ordered Hungary to cede further territory in March 1919. Berinkey resigned as prime minister immediately, leaving the response to Károlyi. This quickly led to the establishment of a new Hungarian Soviet Republic under the KMP.
