History
The party was created by Kun, under the name Party of Communists in Hungary (KMP) (Kommunisták Magyarországi Pártja). He took direct orders from Lenin. The party was banned by the Károlyi government.
The party seized power in March 1919 and established the Hungarian Soviet Republic. Sándor Garbai was named prime minister, but as a direct subordinate of Lenin, Kun was the de facto head of state. This state continued for a few months, until Romanian intervention ousted it.
The party was renamed to the Hungarian Communist Party during the Soviet occupation.
In 1948, the party was forcibly merged with the SDP to form the MDP.
