Excel Copy/Paste

A description of Excel's copy and paste functionality.


Special Copy

To apply special filtering rules to a copy operation...

  1. Select the range that includes all cells that should be copied
  2. Use Ctrl+G or select Go To... from the Home ribbon

  3. Select Special at the bottom right corner of the popup

  4. Make selections on the popup to adjust which cells will be copied

The selection is now filtered according to the selections. Note that defaults are reset immediately.

This can be used to accomplish tasks including:

  • copy only visible cells
  • copy only formulas
  • copy only constant numeric values


Special Paste

With a copy operation already made, select a destination cell (or range). Do any of the following:

  • Right click to bring up a context menu, then...
    • Select one of the options shown under Paste Options, which includes the most common special paste operations.

    • Hover over the > next to Paste Special... to reveal more operations.

    • Select Paste Special... to view all special paste operations.

  • Select the Paste option from the Home ribbon. Select one of the options shown in the dropdown menu.
