Local Mail Transfer Protocol (LMTP) is a communication protocol developed to complement SMTP in situations where there is no recipient mail queue.

History
The Simple Mail Transfer Protocol makes mail queue essential for the proper handling of messages. In a number of circumstances, a mail queue is either unnecessary or impossible. For example, a mail storage server would waste complexity on a queue. As another example, local mail should be deposited directly into a mailbox rather than sit in a queue.
