Salona was sacked in 639, leading some refugees to settle in Trogir. Trogir developed as a [[WorldHistory/DalmatianCityStates|city state]] under the protection of the [[WorldHistory/ByzantineEmpire|Byzantine Empire]]. It submitted to [[WorldHistory/RepublicOfVenice|Venetian]] suzerainity in 1000, then to [[Hungary/Coloman|Hungary]] in 1105. In 1242, [[Hungary/BelaIV|Bela IV]] fled from the [[WorldHistory/GoldenHorde|Mongol]] invasion to Trogir's fortifications. Trogir was under Venetian rule from 1420 until 1797.
