After [[WorldHistory/RomanEmpire|Roman]] conquest however, it became significantly less important than nearby '''Salona''', which was made the capital of [[WorldHistory/RomanEmpire/AdministrativeSubdivisions#Provinces|Dalmatia]]. Salona was sacked in 639, leading some refugees to settle in Trogir. Trogir developed as a [[WorldHistory/DalmatianCityStates|city state]] under the protection of the [[WorldHistory/ByzantineEmpire|Byzantine Empire]]. It submitted to [[Italy/Democratization#Republic_of_Venice|Venetian]] suzerainity in 1000, then to [[Hungary/Coloman|Coloman]] in 1105. In 1242, [[Hungary/BelaIV|Bela IV]] fled here from the [[WorldHistory/GoldenHorde|Mongol]] invasion. It was under Venetian rule again from 1420 until 1797.
