Trogir
Trogir is a town in Croatia.
History
Trogir was founded as a Greek colony and developed into a major port town. After Roman conquest however, it became significantly less important than nearby Salona, which was made the capital of Dalmatia. Salona was sacked in 639, leading some refugees to settle in Trogir.
Trogir developed as a city state under the protection of the Byzantine Empire. It submitted to Venetian suzerainity in 1000, then to Coloman in 1105. In 1242, Bela IV fled here from the Mongol invasion. It was under Venetian rule again from 1420 until 1797.
Following a brief Napoleonic conquest, Trogir was ceded to the Austrian Empire.
