Trogir
Trogir is a town in Croatia.
History
Trogir was founded as a Greek colony and developed into a major port town.
After Romans conquest, Trogir became significantly less important than nearby Salona, which was made the capital of the province of Dalmatia. Salona was sacked in 639, leading some refugees to settle in Trogir.
Trogir developed as a city state under the protection of the Byzantine Empire. It submitted to Venetian suzerainity in 1000, then to Coloman in 1105. In 1242, Bela IV fled from the Mongol invasion to Trogir's fortifications. Trogir was under Venetian rule from 1420 until 1797.
Following a brief Napoleonic conquest, Trogir was ceded to the Austro-Hungarian Empire.
