History

Sibinek was settled by the Croats. Petar Kresimir IV established his capital here, leading to it also being known as Kresimirov grad (literally "Kresimir's city").

Sibinek was conquered by the Venetians for the first time in 1116, then by the Byzantines in 1124, then by Hungary in 1133. The Republic of Venice reclaimed the city in 1412. It is commonly grouped with the Dalmatian city states. It came to be known as Sebenico in this era.

Following a brief Napoleonic conquest, Sibenik was ceded to the Austro-Hungarian Empire.
