Rab is a town in Croatia, on an island also named Rab.
History
The island was inhabited by Liburnians; the Greeks called it Arba. Octavian Augustus built fortifications and named the city Municipium. It developed as a city state under the protection of the Byzantine Empire. It submitted to Venetian suzerainity in 1000, then was conquered by Louis I in 1358. Venice reclaimed the city in 1409.
Following a brief Napoleonic conquest, Rab was ceded to the Austrian Empire.
