The [[WorldHistory/RomanEmpire|Romans]] conquered the island and fortified it. It was ceded to the [[WorldHistory/ByzantineEmpire|Byzantines]] in 812 and developed as a [[WorldHistory/DalmatianCityStates|city state]]. The [[Italy/Democratization#Republic_of_Venice|Venetians]] conquered it for the first time in 1001. Around this time, the city also came to be known as '''Vekla''' or '''Veglia'''.
