Krk
Krk is a city in Croatia, on an island also named Krk.
History
The island has been inhabited by Liburnians since the Neolithic era. They called it Curicum. The Romans conquered the island and fortified it.
Krk was ceded to the Byzantines in 812 and developed as a city state. The Venetians conquered it for the first time in 1001. The city came to be known as Vekla or Veglia.
The Frankopan dynasty emerged from Krk; Dujam was made count of Krk by the Venetians in 1118, after their second conquest.
Krk was ceded to direct Austrian rule in 1797.
