History

The island has been inhabited by Liburnians as Curicum since the Neolithic era. The Romans conquered the island and fortified it. It was ceded to the Byzantines in 812 and developed as a city state. The Venetians conquered it for the first time in 1001. Around this time, the city also came to be known as Vekla or Veglia.

The Frankopan dynasty emerged from the city state; Dujam was created count of Krk by the Venetians in 1118 after their second conquest.

Krk was ceded to direct Austrian rule as a part of Illyria in 1797.
