Cres
Cres is a town in Croatia, on an island also named Cres.
History
The Greeks called this island Chersos. Later this became Cresta.
In the early 9th century Slavs began settling here. It developed as a city-state under the protection of the Byzantines. The Venetians came to dominate Cres and neighboring islands in the 10th and 11th centuries.
Following a brief Napoleonic conquest, Dubrovnik was ceded to the Austrian Empire.
