Constitution of the Republic of Croatia

The Constitution of the Republic of Croatia is the basis for the government of Croatia.

History

While a member of Yugoslavia, the Socialist Republic of Croatia had its own constitution and parliament.

The first multi-party elections were held in April 1990. The new parliament rapidly amended the constitution:

  • 'Socialist' was dropped from the state's name
  • the office of the presidency was created with many executive powers

  • presidents serve 5-year terms, with a term limit of 2

This series of ammendments came to be known as the Christmas Constitution.

After the 2000 general elections, the constitution was amended to move most executive powers back to the office of the prime minister.
