Srebrenica

Srebrenica is a town in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

History

Srebrenica was an Illyrian mining town.

By the 14th century it was an important trading town under the influence of the Republic of Ragusa. In the 15th century it would be contested between Hungary, Serbia, Bosnia, and the Ottoman Empire.

Once the Ottomans became dominant, Srebrenica declined economically.

Srebrenica was ceded to the Austro-Hungarian Empire in 1878.

During the Bosnian War, majority-Bosniak villages surrounding Srebrenica were frequently attacked and destroyed. In July 1995, the army of Republika Srpska took Srebrenica and massacred all men of fighting age. The Srebrenica genocide saw over 8000 deaths.
