History

The Scovenberch (a.k.a. Schaunberg) dynasty was raised by Frederick Barbarossa. They established a castle in Hartkirchen around 1150.

Nearby Eferding grew rapidly and was granted city rights in 1222.

In the 16th century, Schaunberg Castle fell into disrepair and the family relocated to Eferding. The Schaunbergers dynasty ended in 1559 with the Starhemberg dynasty inheriting; Eferding Castle became known as Starhemberg Castle.
