History
Alfred became a highly decorated officer during the Napoleonic Wars.
When the revolutions of 1848 reached Vienna, Alfred established a policy of martial law and brutal force. This put him at odds with city politicians and he was reassigned to govern Prague.
The Whitsuntide events (or Pentacostal Storm) erupted there in June, which Alfred again repressed with brutal force.
The Vienna Uprising began in October and forced Ferdinand I to flee. Alfred was recalled to the city to participate in its retaking.
In January, Franz Joseph directed him to end the parallel revolutions in Hungary, which he was unable to acomplish.
